Former home to one of Nashville’s prominent families, the Cheeks – who ran a wholesale grocery operation, and eventually came to run several businesses; Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art is a very impressive Nashville sight. Visited as much for the botanical gardens as the art museum or even the Georgian-style mansion, itself; the huge grounds see thousands of visitors each year.
Of the dozen-or-so distinct gardens, some of the most impressive include Shomu-en, the Japanese Garden, Herb Study Garden, Wills Perennial Garden and Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail. As far as the gardens go, the breathtaking and beautifully-kept grounds are something visitors will never forget.
In its permanent collection, the art museum is home to over 600 paintings and 5000 drawings, photographs and prints, and numerous sculptures. On top of that, a collection of decorative artworks like vases and silverwork can be found throughout the mansion. Aside from the collection, however, Cheekwood hosts many temporary or traveling exhibits throughout each year, keeping it as fresh as it is classic.
